2x4 vs. 4x4: which stand do you need?
The 2x4 stand is appropriate for standard porch swings (non-bed) up to 6 feet wide with normal adult occupancy loads. The 4x4 stand is required for swing beds, heavier swings, or any application where maximum structural capacity is needed. When in doubt, choose the 4x4 — the incremental cost is worth the added peace of mind for a structure that holds people.
Sizing
Match the stand size to your swing width plus 1–2 feet for hardware clearance on each side. A 4-foot swing pairs well with a 4 or 5-foot stand; a 5-foot swing pairs with a 5 or 6-foot stand.
